Senior Manager, U.S. Risk Governance Specialist

Reporting to the U.S. Head of Risk Governance and Policy, you will drive Scotiabank U.S.’s (SBUS) strategic initiative to upgrade and rewrite Policy Documents (frameworks, policies, procedures, and guidelines) for the U.S. This entails leading and facilitating with the respective document owners to reconfigure the documents into a new format and ensure Policy Documents are submitted to appropriate approval authority for review and approval on the required scheduled basis. You will be responsible for the implementation, enhancement and administration of the U.S. policy management system and overall management of the policy process. Also, you will lead the Risk Governance Program which includes the governance structure and management reporting.

 

Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

Leading certain Risk Governance duties including, as needed:

Assisting the U.S. Head of Risk Governance and Policy to manage all internal employee and external client facing forms used by the Bank to ensure consistent, current document usage, and storage
Providing support for maintenance of the committee governance structure including the review and rationalization of the sub-committees and parent committee structure and effective challenge in committees
Organizing, managing, and coordinating the operations for committee meetings and reporting packages including adequate governance for review and approval of documentation, business reviews and associated limits, and any other items for appropriate escalation and reporting
Coordinating monthly meetings for Risk committee secretaries including developing the agenda and documenting and distributing meeting minutes
Assisting in the annual refresh of the Risk committees’ charters

Driving the U.S.’s strategic initiative to upgrade and rewrite SBUS Policy Documents into a new format and suggest or develop additional Policy Documents needed to ensure compliance with applicable business and regulatory requirements
Identifying, onboarding and managing temporary resources in populating the documents and templates in the new policy management system

Leading the effort to identify gaps in the current framework and in Policy Documents, in redesigning a more efficient Policy Document organization, and in redrafting Policy Documents, as needed
Monitoring issues, developments, trends, and investments in key policy areas
Pro-actively conducting policy research and analysis on priority issues
Championing and educating policy owners on how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions regarding Policy Documents
Ensuring Policy Document owners include all required elements into the related documents by pro-actively engaging and providing training to the owners on how Policy Documents are to be structured and written in compliance with the SBUS Policy of Policies
Pro-actively guide and counsel business line and risk/ compliance managers to develop new Policy Documents or revisions to existing Policy Documents as new products or services are offered, new lines of business are initiated, or new regulatory requirements are published
Ensuring all frameworks and policies are aligned with the appropriate approving body and properly scheduled for ongoing submission to and review and approval by the appropriate committee
Deepening subject matter expertise for SBUS on Policy Document standards and use of the policy management system
Performing policy management system development and upkeep including performing any user acceptance testing pertaining to system upgrades or enhancements implemented by the vendor
Accurate metadata and content in and appropriate usage of the policy management system including maintaining archived historical versions of published Policy Documents in compliance with the record retention requirements
Driving identification and escalation of violations and exceptions to Policy Documents as appropriate
Representing the team on internal and external policy working groups where appropriate and administer the SBUS policy management working group including scheduling meetings, developing agendas, and documenting meeting minutes. Provide support for maintenance of the committee governance structure including the review and rationalization of the sub-committees and parent committee structure and effective challenge in committees
Managing the identification of gaps in the current risk governance framework, redesigning a more efficient document organization, and in redrafting documents/charters, as needed
 

Do you have the skills you need to succeed? We’d love to work with you, if you have:

A Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Arts degree or equivalent job experience
Experience working with policies – evaluating and designing a policy framework, redesigning a more efficient Policy Document organization, and in drafting/ redrafting Policy Documents
Project Management, Editing and/or Technical Writer certificates preferred. Ability to create or revise technical/ support documentation with multiple stakeholders and subject matter experts providing input
Prior regulatory agency experience and/ or a JD (would be helpful)
A strong understanding of the U.S. Regulatory Landscape
Experience in leading dynamic and multifaceted projects
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Creative problem solving and the ability to motivate others and implement new solutions. Seek alternatives, take initiative, and assume responsibility for your actions
A commitment to continuous learning by gaining knowledge, skills, and experience on an ongoing basis in order to better serve the customer, increase personal satisfaction, and improve the Bank
The ability to manage time to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet or exceed expectations; ability to take initiative on a given task or project; and persist with it to completion
The ability to prioritize tasks
Experience in document formatting, reviewing, editing, and proofreading with strong attention to detail
