The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province’s power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province’s electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario’s electricity needs – now and into the future.

The opportunity

Provides oversight and responsibility for the performance and operation of the AppDev team. Oversees performance on a daily basis, taking corrective action where necessary to ensure functionality, utilization and availability. Effectively supervises staff such that departmental standards and expectations are realized.

What you’ll do

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provides general supervision to the technical team, ensuring the performance of all personnel, services and/or technology.
Coach staff and provide feedback for purposes of improving their productivity, enhancing customer/peer relations and developing career plans and training requirements.
Conduct performance appraisals on staff, provide feedback and ensure staff receive appropriate training and development.
Ensure that the health and safety needs of employees are met.
Communicates IESO policies and procedures and ensures adherence to established IESO policies, standards, processes, procedures and programs.

Delivery Responsibilities

Negotiate with internal/external customers the conditions of satisfaction and ensure that unit products and services are delivered as expected and within budget.
Negotiate with internal/external customers the delivery schedule of unit products and services considering IESO priorities.
Communicate impact of the unit’s work product to all stakeholders
Provide qualified resources to support the assigned work by aligning available skills to customer needs.
Work with customers to identify their Information Technology (IT) needs and provide solutions to support their business processes in a manner that demonstrates value-add.
Provide technical advice/consulting to line business or IT staff to troubleshoot or enhance systems to support productivity improvements or market rule changes.
Ensure the proper technical integration of systems, applications and databases in the overall system architecture.
Participates in and ensures that documentation is developed for safe and effective uses of equipment.
Participates and ensures that documentation is developed for operations of a delivered solution.
Provides project management for small to medium size departmental projects, ensuring the proper and timely scheduling and allocation of resources, including staffing. Provides reports and communicates progress to manager. Collaborates with internal and external sources or vendors.

Continuous Improvement Responsibilities

Identify areas of improvement (in all aspects of service delivery) and lead the team in the implementation of the identified improvements.
Participate in the establishment of best practices with respect to development, design and ongoing support.
Establish and maintain development tool set based on current and future needs.
Maintain knowledge of industry trends in relation to the tools and platforms leveraged by the technical team to provide guidance in current tool and platform usage as well as future usage.

Vendor Engagement

Work with vendors in the scoping and delivery of services as required by internal/external customers.
Participate in any vendor selection process.
Participate in the oversight of vendor development practices including the development and enforcement of code validation guidelines.

What you need to succeed

Education:

Requires knowledge of systems development, system operations and general project management principles. Requires knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports and presentations.
This knowledge is normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year University education in the appropriate field/discipline, or by having the equivalent level of education.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience with resource management and project management.
Demonstrated experience with multiple delivery methodologies (Waterfall, Agile, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to interact with internal management team and external clients using strong leadership and communication skills.
Experience with designing, implementing, and supporting applications with Java and J2EE technologies.
Experience with data integrations between systems, including Application Programming Interface (APIs), Extract, Transform, Load/ Extract, Load, Transform (ETL/ELT).
Experience with DevOps and/or DevSecOps.
Experience and/or understanding of Microservices and application containerization.

A period of 8 years and up to and including 10 years is considered necessary to gain this experience, including approximately 8 years of experience in systems management and/or development, as well as 3 years of experience leading a technical team.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs.
