Director, Environmental Social Governance (ESG) Risk Oversight

Purpose

The Director – ESG Risk Oversight will be part of the Enterprise Risk – Governance team in Global Risk Management reporting to the SVP – Enterprise Risk.  The Director will work with the SVP to ensure that the Bank’s exposure to E&S risk is consistent with its risk appetite.

The Director is expected to have significant knowledge of and familiarity with developing and operationalizing risk framework, policy, appetite and reporting metrics.  An interest in and knowledge of environmental and climate risks as well as sustainability topics applicable to the Bank is required.  The Director will make suggestions on the direction and activities of ESG risk management. Sound communication, interpersonal and presentation skills will be required in daily dealings across the Bank. The Director will also be expected to collaborate with the Bank’s business lines and other Bank units on ESG risk issues and will lead the execution of second line oversight and challenge activities for the ESG portfolio at the bank.

 

Accountabilities

Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
Lead the development, implementation and maintenance of the Bank’s ESG Risk Framework, Risk Appetite and Metrics
Be the Bank’s expert on ESG Risk frameworks and policies, collaborate with other parts of the enterprise to which ESG Risks are present to assure ESG risks are adequately identified and managed.
Support Bank subsidiaries and geographies as they navigate new and emerging regulatory requirements.
Communicate how the Bank’s ESG risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions, provide training to other parts of the Bank on all aspects of ESG Risk policies and documentation and reporting.
Manage the identification and reporting of ESG risk metrics.
Represent the Bank on E&S risk management working groups, panels and workshops, engage with external stakeholders regarding the Bank’s ESG risk topics.
Inform the Bank on new and pending ESG risk issues, regulations and legislation.
Monitor best practices at other financial institutions in Canada and globally.
Collaborate with other internal stakeholders such as Investor Relations, Marketing, Communications, Legal, Real Estate, etc.
Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team.
 

Education / Experience / Other Information

Strong policy expertise from within a financial institution with a focus on risk frameworks, appetite, metrics, culture and communication
Experience in managing new and emerging risks from concept to implementation while keeping pace with regulatory requirements
Understanding of ESG risk topics, especially in the context of the Financial Services Sector.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in the creation and implementation of the Bank’s ESG risk policies and procedures.
Strong communication and relationship skills, including presentation, training and meeting skills, to convey the Bank’s ESG objectives, policies and procedures both internally and externally.
Minimum of 7 years in a similar policy or Environmental/ climate risk role, ideally within a financial institution or consulting
Undergraduate or graduate degree in risk, policy, or environmental studies
Spanish and/or French language fluency would be an asset.
