Purpose of Job:

 

Is responsible for the overall success of the Global Risk Management (GRM) function ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

 

Reporting to the Group Head & Chief Risk Officer (CRO), the Director, Strategic Business Initiatives serves as a thought partner and strategic advisor.  This role supports the Group Head & CRO to maximize his/her impact and further GRM strategic priorities.   There are four critical areas where this is achieved: effective time management, forward planning, strategic support and relationship management.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

Leads and drives stakeholder focused culture. Enables the Group Head & CRO to deepen client relationships and leverages broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
 
Delivers or is a key participant on special projects and business initiatives, as assigned by the Group Head & CRO, that drive business value.
 

Act as a trusted partner to the Group Head & CRO, helping him/her define priorities and ensuring he/she is set up to achieve them by:
Driving the effectiveness and efficiency of Global Head & CRO’s time and ensuring it aligns with the most critical organizational priorities, where the Global Head’s voice is specifically necessary
Gathering necessary information and analyses from various sources and key stakeholders, to identify opportunities for synergies to drive operational awareness and meet objectives
Developing integrated and holistic strategies to ensure Group Head & CRO is well-positioned to make decisions on a range of issues
Building an understanding of the critical work that is happening across the business group and surfacing issues, bright spots, and challenges
Proactive identification of issues that could impact the successful execution of the Global Head & CRO’s commitments. This responsibility involves elevating those issues that the Group Head & CRO should be aware and framing/positioning ideas to resolve the problem/mitigate the risk
Acting as a liaison/advisor to senior bank leaders and external stakeholders, as appropriate, to help advance both the division’s priorities and the bank’s strategic priorities.

 

Ensure the Senior Management Team operate effectively as a group, including:
Partnering with the Global Head & CRO and others to build a strong culture and sense of team among the different groups
Orchestrate and facilitate group events, meeting agendas, logistics, and follow-ups both within the senior management team and across the Bank. Ensure that meetings, deadlines, presentation, and other duties of the Group Head & CRO office are carried out seamlessly.
 
Overarching priorities include:

Working with Communications on speech creation, community forum content, and thought leadership pieces about Global Risk Management both externally and internally.
Support on key priorities for the year and ahead and coordinate with groups responsible for priorities to receive consistent and frequent updates on progress being made.
Act as a strategic advisor by making informed recommendations for use of his/her time, voice, and in responding to potential concerns.
 

Supports Bank-wide initiatives by leveraging the voice, strategy, and participation of the Group Head, thereby ensuring alignment across internal and external communication channels and employee groups. Identifies and eliminates duplication and inefficiencies across groups, as it relates to the Group Head & Chief Risk Officer.  
 
Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank’s risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank’s risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout accountabilities.
 
Creates an effective and efficient operating environment, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
 
Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.
 

Job Requirements:

 

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in the disciplines of Business Management, and Communications
5-10 years in-depth banking knowledge
Proven communicator across various platforms (internal and external)
Strong business intuition, results-focused, performance-oriented and expense-sensitive – demonstrates a shareholder mindset
Strong organizational skills to coordinate and prioritize a number of concurrent projects.
Excellent visionary, planning and analytical skills.
Strong negotiating, influencing and communication skills (written and oral) to influence all levels of the organization through the presentation of insight based on sound investigation experiences.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills that facilitate a positive and effective team environment at all levels of the organization.
High credibility with the Bank’s senior management team and with business line and other functional area management teams.
Self-reliant and results oriented
