Senior Resilience Architect

As a Senior Resilience Architect, you will be actively engaged in supporting architecture teams across Scotiabank to improve the resilience of their architectures. This will include (but not limited to) reviewing solutions in various architecture review boards, advising projects on how to improve resilience of their designs, supporting architecture teams to build resilient patterns and contributing to templates, policies, and standards related to resilience. You will work closely with the Global System Reliability Office (GSRO), Enterprise Architecture and various architecture teams across Scotiabank’s technology teams.

 

Major Accountabilities

 

Review projects in enterprise and regional architecture boards and champion the definition and implementation of resilience policies for new and existing solutions
Maintain resilience related sections of architecture templates
Work in collaboration with Director, Global System Reliability Engineering to drive resilient architectures
Advise architecture teams on designing and engineering resilient systems
Lead reviews of implemented solutions to establish current resilience posture
Lead and/or contribute to troubleshooting of incidents where failures in architecture and engineering is identified as a key contributor to the failure.
Participate in post-mortem reviews, to identify the actual root cause of major incidents, and enabling continuous improvement in process and outcomes
Lead In-depth technical and data analysis to gauge service trends and drive improvements.
Assist in the development of guides, patterns, templates, policies and standards related to resilience
Collaborate with a team of Reliability Engineers (directly and through local and global communities of practice)
Collaborate and contribute to definitions of SLOs and SLIs with business partners and the GSRO team.
Assist in improving foundational resilience capabilities such as infrastructure automation and monitoring
Mentors and coaches’ others and transfers subject matter expertise where appropriate
 

 

 

Skills and competences

 

Candidates require strong leadership, communication and strategic influencing capability, supported by well-developed analytical and strategic thinking competencies.
Well developed technology foundational knowledge across multiple disciplines
Strong analytic competency with a bias towards identifying failure scenarios (and not necessarily bound by a check list)
Ability to clearly articulate and communicate problems with solutions when identified
Collaborative trusted partner for architecture and engineering teams
Ability to maintain calm during stressful situations
Ability to work with teams across Scotiabank locations
Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Fluency in Spanish is desirable
Role is based in Canada, with an expectation to attend meetings in E.T. time zone. Post pandemic restrictions, the role can continue to be remote – with limited travel expected to Toronto downtown offices or other Scotiabank offices.  
 

 

Education and Experience

 

Extensive understanding of the technology stack, and is thus able to discuss resilience at various layers of technology deployment (e.g. physical deployment, storage, network, operating systems, databases, middleware, load balancers, APIs, etc.)
Knowledge and experience in at least 5 technology disciplines, such as software development, API management, containers, system design, information security, technology third party management, cloud computing (bias towards VMWare, Azure and GCP), midrange and mainframe computing, database management, operating system management, incident – problem – change management, and network management.
Detailed expertise in one or more technology disciplines, preferably in an engineering or architecture capacity
Knowledge (and ideally certification) of architecture frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman and SABSA.
Experience with ITSM tools (ServiceNow, a plus) with strong understanding of SRE and service management principles
Experience working in an agile environment
Experience working with large-scale distributed systems in financial institutions or safety critical environments is desirable.
Experience as a SRE practitioner, with knowledge on monitoring strategies and associated tooling is desirable.
