Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Data Office in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans and initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  The main function of the Senior Data Engineer role is to support investigation, development, testing and operationalization of data solutions related to strategic goals of the Data Office. This role ensures all activities are conducted in compliance with enterprise data standards, policies and procedures.

 

 

Accountabilities:

•    Gathers information across various sources / platforms and manages queries and programming of the structured data / large databases to address complex business issues as part of one or more workstreams within a larger project
•    Exercises judgment while employing various data techniques and procedures to perform the continuous iteration and analysis of past and current data, to obtain insights about a business challenge / issue that can lead to improved decision-making
•    Manages enhancement of existing programming tools and systems to support business ad-hoc queries
•    Manages end to end design, development, maintenance and management of databases / data marts
•    Profiles and analyzes source data to determine the best reporting structures to build
•    Conducts metadata management, data cleaning and data lineage documentation
•    Provides day-to-day support and technical expertise to both technical and non-technical teams
•    Works with other project team members to brainstorm solutions to problems and support others in their goals.
•    Exhibits sound judgement, keen eye for details and tenacity for solving difficult problems.
•    Uses strong analytical skills and support use of data for sound decision making.

 

 

Experience:

•    Understanding of how to leverage data analysis tools, data platforms and analytical methods to provide solutions to business problems and able to work with a lot of ambiguity
•    Proficiency with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and data programming and scripting languages such as SQL, Python, Spark, SAS, R and Unix/Linux
•    Previous use of multiple project management practices (Agile and Waterfall) to develop and deliver data products
•    Demonstrated experience translating business needs into technical requirements 

 

 

Qualifications:

•    Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or quantitative field
•    5+ years industry experience with big data technology (Hadoop, Hive, HDFS) 
•    Proficiency with relational databases (Oracle, DB2, MS SQL Server)
•    Industry experience as a Data Engineer or Data Analyst
•    Data modelling and warehousing experience 
•    Strong proficiency in SQL
